We’re talking about poker. But, before you can really learn the English associated with poker, it’s important to have the vocabulary that we use for playing cards in general. And, there’s more than a little bit of this.
Do you play cards? Think of the different vocabulary you use for cards in your own language. Don’t forget to think of the different actions associated with cards. In the recording, we’ll talk about all of this. It’s a lot of vocabulary, and it goes a little bit fast. It might help you if you have a pencil or pen to take notes. We’re going to talk about:
-
A deck of cards
-
Suits
-
Diamonds
-
Hearts
-
Clubs
-
Spades
-
-
Face cards
-
the Jack
-
the Queen
-
the King
-
the Ace
-
-
How to ‘name’ cards in English
-
the Joker
-
Shuffling
-
Cutting the deck
-
Dealing
With this vocabulary, can you explain how your favorite card game is played? I’d be especially interested to hear if there’s a game you play that you think that Americans don’t know.
