Sentence Order eWorksheet
One of the things that most of my students struggle with is sentence order. I teach mainly native German speakers and, in German, the order of the words in a sentence is not as important as it in English. Unfortunately, if you don’t observe the ‘rules’ (though a lot of it is ‘feelings’) of where each word belongs in a sentence, you’re likely to confuse the people you talk to. The reason is simple: the order of words in an English sentence tells us what ‘job’ each word has.
If you’re not sure about sentence order, try the sentence order quiz. If you want to review, the Sentence Order eWorksheet can be downloaded from the eWorksheets page.
Warning: With the eWorksheets, it’s my goal to avoid getting too ‘technical’ with the grammar and to instead focus on developing the ‘feeling’ you need to speak English fluently. With the Sentence Order eWorksheet, however, it’s impossible to avoid using words like ’subject,’ ‘indirect object,’ and ‘direct object.’ The good news is that all the terms are defined in the eWorksheet and, while it seems long (17 pages) it includes a lot of practice exercises and the solutions to all the exercises.
